The Cannoli: A Delicious Journey Through Time
A crisp, golden shell, filled with smooth, velvety cream – this can only describe one beloved treat: the cannoli. Arguably one of the most iconic Italian pastries, the cannoli has become a staple here at LPS, served fresh every day. But have you ever wondered where this irresistible pastry got its start? Join us as we explore the fascinating history behind the cannoli.
A Rich History
The cannoli’s roots are believed to trace back to the 9th and 10th centuries, during the period of Arab rule in Sicily. The Arabs introduced sugar, candied fruits, and innovative pastry techniques to the island, leaving a lasting impact on Sicilian cuisine. The name “cannolo” is derived from the Italian word for “little tube,” a fitting reference to the pastry’s signature shape.
The Sicilian Tradition
Originating in Palermo, Sicily, the cannoli was originally tied to fertility rituals and was traditionally made to celebrate Carnevale, the festive season leading up to Lent. During this time, foods with suggestive shapes were often enjoyed as part of fertility celebrations. Over the centuries, the cannoli has evolved from a ritualistic dish to a beloved sweet enjoyed year-round.
The Cannoli in Pop Culture
The cannoli gained worldwide fame thanks to the iconic line “Leave the gun, take the cannolis,” from the 1972 film The Godfather. This memorable quote was inspired by director Francis Ford Coppola’s childhood memories of white cannoli boxes, a simple but lasting image that became ingrained in pop culture.
A Taste of New Jersey’s Legacy
In the 2000s, a tour company offered fans a chance to visit famous locations from the hit TV series The Sopranos. While LPS never appeared directly on the show, this tour would regularly stop by our shop, giving tourists the chance to savor an authentic “Jersey cannoli” and experience a true taste of Italian-American tradition.
From its ancient origins in Sicily to its starring role in film and television, the cannoli continues to captivate people around the world. Here at LPS, we are proud to carry on this rich legacy, bringing you the very best of this timeless pastry every day.
